As I struggled through my first few days of the labor and delivery service this week, a more seasoned resident came up to me and whispered two words: “self-preservation.”

Hah! Was I that obvious?!

It’s true… I’ve been doing a pretty poor job on that front, and Ani Difranco’s words have been on my mind: “Self-preservation is a full time occupation.”

So, some things I’ve been trying:

  • Snacking on exciting protein/fiber bars

Zing chocolate coconut bars are my new absolute favorite (until I OD, which will probably be soon)

  • Bringing chia seed pudding and mango & avocado salad snacks with me

Mixed with dark chocolate and walnuts...

  • Taking my vitamins (multivitamin, D3, omega3) before leaving for the day
  • Chugging water (before leaving my apartment and whenever I get a break in the day)
  • Taking a moment to breath and appreciate the beauty and intimacy of the birthing process (how lucky am I to be a part of that?!)

And, some things I need to work on:

  • Sleeping
  • Making time to eat real food for lunch
  • Drinking more water (MUCH more – need to start actually going to the bathroom during the day)
  • Eating healthy snacks instead of sugary processed ones (more nuts, carrots)
  • Making time for 7-10 minute morning workouts (i.e. 40 squats, 30 situps, 20 pushups, 10 attempted pull-ups)
  • Making a phone call a day
  • Appreciating my beautiful city (and especially the not-so-beautiful things that go along with it)

Any other self-preservation tips out there?! Would love to hear from you…

Liberian Saying:
Empty bag can’t stand.
So relieved you decided sleep was not a frivolous expenditure!

Hi Christina! I need to think about self-preservation right now too. For me it’s been a matter of looking for ways in which I can simplify my life. And when I do have a little bit of free time forcing myself not to spend it getting something done, but to relax and enjoy it.

As always, I love reading your posts!
