Changing our genes

by Christina on October 15, 2011

I’m back on inpatient medicine and finding it completely overwhelming! There’s been minimal time for sleep, food, water, friends, reading, etc… but thanks to my dad and sister for their reading and weeding, check these out:

  • New research: our diet changes the expression of our genes.

A diet high in raw vegetables, fruits and berries decreased cardiovascular risk in people with the 9p21 gene variant (a gene associated with increased risk of heart disease).

  • Related book (definitely going on my reading list!):

“Super Immunity” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman may be the most important book on health I’ve ever read. He argues convincingly that the modern American diet is causing a tragic weakening in our immune systems. He claims that we are nutritionally deficient (especially in plant-derived phytochemicals), and that eating healthier foods, especially vegetables, can supercharge our immune systems to protect us powerfully against disease.

It is possible, he says, to prevent most common modern diseases, such as flu, colds, and cancers. I also learned that pomegranates, which I was unfamiliar with before I read this book, are, like berries, green vegetables, mushrooms, and onions, an incredibly health-producing food.

Bottom line: all of us need to eat far more unrefined and unprocessed vegetation. Vegetable consumption is the most important factor in preventing chronic disease and premature death. Currently, Fuhrman argues, we are eating ourselves to sickness.

Hi Christina! I know your sister from way back on the East Coast, and was so excited to stumble across your blog!

I just finished a great book about agriculture and the fundamental changes in our genes that sprouted from this huge lifestyle/diet change. It’s called “Pandora’s Seed” by Spencer Wells. Check it out!
