One of the best medicines

Excellent video by Dr. Mike Evans about one of the best (and free) medicines we can take… exercise!

Unfortunately exercise is often not included in big trials funded by pharma — there is no $$ to be made when exercise is found to be as or more effective than a pill.

This video is great because it highlights the studies that have been done, and the huge benefits of exercise for common health problems. Some highlights:

  • Knee arthritis: reduces rates of pain and disability by 47%
  • Dementia and alzheimer’s: reduces progression by 50%
  • Diabetes: reduces progression by 58%
  • Hip fractures: 41% reduction in hip fracture risk in postmenopausal women
  • Anxiety: reduces by 48%
  • Depression: 30% relieved with low-dose exercise, up to 47% with higher dose

When it comes to fatigue, quality of life, and general wellbeing, exercise is one of the best things we can prescribe. And it turns out, we don’t even need a huge dose of it: 30 minutes of walking a day provides most of the benefits.

This post is inspiring me to tie on my sneakers and go for a run post-work (rather than put on my slippers and crash on the couch). Thank you, Tina!

What a superb video! I’m a film producer and few of the films I produce have that high entertainment and educational value. Good for Dr. Mike Evans.
And his message is totally and utterly persuasive! I teach at a university, and I’m shocked at how unfit my students are and how little attention they give to preventive health measures in their lives, including regular exercise.
