Your punishment? Go meditate

by Christina on September 26, 2016

Did you see this story about kids meditating instead of doing detention in school?

The Robert W. Coleman Elementary School in Baltimore is doing it and setting the example. Instead of detention they created a Mindful Moment Room. The kids sit, breathe, and talk about what happened.

I love this! It seems like something every school could implement. The school also has an after-school yoga and a gardening program.

There continue to be studies coming out on the benefits of yoga and meditation, and it makes sense to me to start this with young kids and set up healthy habits for the rest of their lives.

It actually makes me think that instead of doing “time-out” with my 2 year old in our laundry room, which we now do almost daily, we could create a “Mindful moment” corner in our house and use that as our discipline strategy.

Has anyone tried something like that?!

My son was too old to try these tips, but this site has been extremely helpful for my parenting. The author talks about “time-in” rather than time-out

Ileana, nice hearing from you and THANK YOU for that website – I have just been reading a bunch of the articles and they’re really helpful. What a great resource!
